The End is Near.

Hello, hello! The end is near which for a lot of people means… FINALS. I know that I, as well as a lot of you, will be completely stressing and possibly freaking out over these next couple of weeks. For this hard time I wanted to share with you all a list of things I do to keep stress at a minimum before, during, and after my finals crisis. (The following images are NOT mine!)

Malia Tate (TW)

BEFORE:

  • Look at any info given to you for what to expect on your midterm. If you were not given a list or something similar then pester your professor for some hints. This way you know what to look for when it comes time to study.
  • Schedule a time in advance for you to go somewhere quiet, or loud if it’s in a study group, so you know when you’ll be studying, for how long, and not accidentally make plans over it.
  • Get all of your indulgences out of the way! Do you have that one show you need to catch up on? Did your fave’s new album just drop? Did a new restaurant open that you’ve been dying to try? Need to share the latest gossip with your BFF? Do those things ASAP so that they don’t serve as distractions when your final needs your attention.

Willow Rosenberg (BTVS)

DURING:

  • Give yourself time. Don’t expect a 5 hour cram sesh to be the key to retaining all the information you need. Admit it, you’re no Willow Rosenberg. Touching some book and just absorbing the information isn’t likely.
  • If you have a speech, record yourself reciting it and then practice by talking along while the recording plays.
  • Every hour of studying deserves a twenty minute break. Within this twenty minutes between studying you can do anything. Grab a snack, listen to music, meditate, or whatever. Just let your mind rest every once in awhile instead of trying to get it all in one go.
  • BRAIN FOOD! Make sure that you’re eating the healthiest food you can get your hands on during this time. Couple that with around the clock hydration and you’ll have the energy you need to get through the hell that is finals week. No one wants to see you crash, not even your Professor.
  • Grab a partner to study with if you end up having questions or feel like you’re missing something.
  • Background music has been proven to help people study. For me, I like to play yoga music. Anything that won’t distract you, but will work as a nice background noise is best. If you don’t like yoga music, or classical, I suggest going foreign. You’ll be able to feel the beat, but won’t get sucked into the lyrics.

AFTER:

  • Now it is time to let loose all the tension that has been building up. Indulge in your favorite activity for however long necessary.
  • Take the longest shower of your life to get rid off all that gross stress sweat. Plus, showers are their own kind of magic medicine. You just can’t help feeling better after.
  • Treat yourself to your favorite food for being able to get through all the crazy that comes with finals.
  • Try not to stress over what grade you got. If you did your best or even half of that, you passed.
  • Dance! It doesn’t matter where, just shake out all of that extra tension.
  • Learn something new. Picking up a new fact or interest can help get your mind off of all the material that has been crammed into it the past couple of weeks. For example: Did you know that a banana is actually a berry, but a strawberry or a raspberry aren’t!?
  • Drink some hot tea. Though there are teas specifically meant to calm the consumer (ie: chamomile) holding a warm cup also has a soothing effect. If you don’t like tea, coffee or hot chocolate will work the same!
  • Get some sleep. It wouldn’t be college if the students weren’t pulling extra hours to get some work in. Have a nice nap.

Good luck, everyone. I hope this helped. You can do it!

Enjoy life,

Brianna Renner

Hello, hello! This week I wanted to share with you all some foreign films that you may like to see. I feel that watching foreign films is a great way of getting exposure to other cultures and to better understanding the world. (None of the following images are mine.)

5. Miss Granny/ Suspicious Woman (수상한 그녀):

Miss Granny - Korean film

Miss Granny is a South Korean film which came out in 2014. I love this movie! It is very similar to that of 17 Again (with Zac Efron) or Seventeen Again (starring Tia &Tamera Mowry). The main character, Oh Doo-ri, gets a second chance at life after being changed back into a young woman, and ends up singing in her grandson’s band. Very cute, funny, and family friendly! The trailer can be found here: Miss Granny Trailer

6. Marie’s Story (Marie Heurtin):

Marie's Story - French film

Marie’s Story is a French film released in 2014. This movie takes place in the 19th century, is based on a true story, and follows the life of a girl who is both blind and deaf. With the help of a nun, the girl learns to communicate with the outside world. This is a real tear-jerker! You can find a trailer for this movie here: Marie’s Story – Official Trailer

I encourage you all to take the time to explore media outside of your own country, culture and language because your eyes will be opened to so many new experiences and possibilities. Some of these films may be found on Netflix and even Youtube.

Brenner Social Media Social Justice

Hello, hello! This week I have a list of people that I recommend you get to know through social media. I view these people as social justice warriors for the variety of messages they get across, or conversations they start, all by using the platform of social media. They’re my role models and I hope that they continue to educate and change people’s lives.

Brenner Book Recommendations

Hello, hello! Before I get into what I wanted to share with you all, I want to apologize for my absence last Friday! Hopefully, today and in the future I am able to make up for it.

What I have for you all are some recommendations of books I’ve read spanning a variety of genres and topics.

In no particular order:

  1. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro: This book was actually required for when I took ENGWR 300 (College Composition), and I surprisingly really liked it. The book is science fiction and covers the topic of cloning. The reason I liked it was that it deals with the complexity of human emotion, expectation, and morality. What would you do if you had a clone in the world potentially looking for you? (There is also a movie version starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightly).
  2. Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry: Everyone pretty much knows Lois Lowry for the book The Giver. This book is similar in the fact that in plays with the topics of societal roles, community, and “Big Brother”. The book centers around a girl with a disability who is violently targeted by other members of the community. However, she is saved (*cough* exploited *cough*) because of her talent in weaving.
  3. Black Blade Blues by J.A. Pitts: In all honesty I picked up this book at the Dollar Tree because I was curious if they actually sold anything worth reading. They do! There are many reasons I love this book. The biggest reason is that it is, as I heard it described previously, “gay without the gay angst.” Unless you’re a frequent consumer of LGBT media, you’re probably wondering “What the hell does that mean?” Essentially, the main character is a lesbian, but that isn’t the most interesting thing about her. Her story line and character development do not revolve around her sexual orientation. There is no big coming out or crazy star-crossed romance. The main character is just a woman who has a wild adventure and kicks ass. My other reason for loving this book is that it is fantasy (my favorite genre). Spoiler alert: there are dragons!
  4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo: I both recommend and warn people away from this book. It is a good book, fiction, and considered a classic for a reason. However, it violated the innocence of my childhood. Nothing, I repeat nothing in this book is anything like the cute Disney movie, so get that out of your head right now. There is murder, kidnapping, insanity, stalking, abuse, and so much more. Essentially, this book is an experience. If you’re up for a challenge, I definitely recommend this book!
  5. Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher: This book covers the topic of teenage suicide. I recommend it because of how powerful the story is. Suicide is still seen as quite a taboo concept, and I feel that people generally need more exposure to stories like the one presented by Jay Asher. Also, it is a huge eyeopener as to how your everyday interactions with other people may affect them in ways you could never guess. I highly recommend following the main character, Clay Jensen, on his journey of discovering the 13 reasons why a girl he knew killed herself.
  6. Krik? Krak! by Edwidge Danticat: Another book that was required reading, but this time in my ENGWR 301 class (College Composition and Literature). This book is a collection of short stories that portray the everyday lives of Haitian women. I was baffled when I read this book because the realities some women are forced to live just because of where they are from are mind blowing in ways both good and bad. I could read each story over and over and always find something new. Within this book are stories that need to be told and read, so here is your opportunity. This is a sign so take it!

Brenner in Disneyland

Hello, hello! Sorry for not having anything to share with all of you last Friday. This is because I knew a moment in my life was finally approaching that would be worth sharing and decided to wait so that I may have something fun to share! Earlier this week I went to Disneyland with some of my family. I had a lot of fun and only regret not wearing more comfortable shoes.

Above I have added pictures of a parade held in Disneyland as part of the 60 year anniversary celebration, a simple snapshot of a street as I was walking around California Adventures, an smoothie cup with my name misspelled, and, lastly, a picture of one of our local high school bands (Elk Grove High) who also had their own small parade down Main Street of Disneyland.

To be honest, I believe the trip would have been more magical if I was still a little kid. Regardless, I was very happy to have had a mini vacation away from home!

How did the rest of you spend your spring break!?

Enjoy Life,

SAVE THE BEES

Hello, hello! This week I wanted to inform you all of a few things you can do to help the bee population as it is something very important to me, and a reflection of how I spend some of my life. (I apologize for no accompanying photos.)

Firstly, do NOT kill them. I am bluntly saying get over your fear! Bees are not the same as hornets or wasps and do not randomly attack or sting unless provoked because the price of stinging someone is their life.(Disclaimer: Many people are allergic to bees and their fear may stem from a real, potential risk to their lives. I understand this, however, there are still avoidance tactics one may utilize to avoid bees and keep themselves safe without having to kill any.)

Take time to plant a couple of things from this list:

  1. Lavender
  2. Thyme
  3. Cilantro
  4. Borage
  5. Sage
  6. Fennel
  7. Hollyhock
  8. Crocus
  9. Buttercup
  10. Snowdrop
  11. Geranium
  12. Aster
  13. Poppy
  14. Sunflower
  15. Sweet Asylum
  16. Calendula
  17. Zinnia
  18. Heliotrope
  19. Pumpkin
  20. Cucumber

As a bonus, these plants will liven up any living space! This is a great excuse to start a garden if you haven’t already.

See a dandelion? Make a wish! Blowing the seeds from a dandelion flower helps spread them. Though dandelions are often written off as weeds, they’re actually essential to the life of not only bees, but beetles and birds, too!

Those are the only tips I have to share, but I’m sure you’re wondering: Why is this important? Well… that is a long and complex answer that I don’t have the patience to type out.
